Visit to Intel
Today I went to the Intel manufacturing site here in Chandlar, Arizona. There are two sites of Intel, the one I visited today is the biggest with 7000 employee. The other site has 3000 employee. The processors are designed here and a portion of it is manufactured in the smallest of these two. A large portion of the processors are manufactured in Taiwan or Singapoor.
My supervisor, Dr. Shah, had a talk on Tolerance and three of his students including me was there with him to participate in the seminar. During our journey in Dr. Shah discussed the aspects of tolerances in such industries.
In the seminar, Dr. Shah was describing the previous and current methods on tolerances. Amazingly some of the guys was catching up things pretty quickly. However, a old guy, reluctant to change his conventional idea about tolerance, was trying to prove that the conventional Y14.5 method is good enough. One thing I noticed they were pretty much nicely converting the things to use with their processors.
After the seminar the metallurgy engineer who arranged the seminar took us to the material inspection lab and showed us the 5000$ Itanium processor material inspection tools and other things. There was another sophisticated lab where temperature was kept as low as plus, minus 1 degree. Man, its was so great to be in such place.
Than we returned back to the lab with a good memory of Intel in mind.
